The History of Cowboy Mounted Shooting - by: Jim Rodgers - CMSA #1

The American Paint Horse Association is accepting Cowboy Mounted Shooting results as a part of the Paint Alternative Competition program (PAC). Your accomplishments can be recorded on your registered horse’s official lifetime performance record in this program.

Through PAC, APHA records the performance of your registered American Paint Horse—Regular Registry of Breeding Stock—when it performs in an activity outside of breed-approved shows. For your victories in any PAC category, you earn credits that are recorded on the official lifetime performance record of your horse.

Currently, Cowboy Mounting Shooting credits are under the “Games” category. If enough interest is shown, a cowboy mounted shooting category is a possibility.

APHA will award a Certificate of Recognition to your registered Paint Horse when it earns at least 20 credits in any one approved category. An APHA Certificate of Achievement is awarded when that horse earns 60 or more credits in any one approved category. Credit system is laid out on Exhibitor Report.

APHA issues annual awards based upon the number of credits earned by all horses in a particular category during the year. If your horse is the one that earns the most credits in a category during the year, your horse will be named PAC year-End Leader in that activity, and receive a plaque and recognition in the Paint Horse Journal.

REQUIREMENTS:

The Club sponsoring the shoot event must have submitted Paint Alternative Competition Event Approval Application prior to shoot dates. Be sure to check with the sponsoring Club to make sure Event Approval Application for its shoots have been submitted.

Although APHA membership is not required to enroll in PAC, you must be a member to receive any award from the association. Competitor must complete PAC Enrollment Form (Available at www.apha.com/pac) and receive enrollment card prior to competition.

Competitor must bring the following to every shoot:
Horse’s APHA Certificate of Registration
PAC Exhibitor Report Form (Available at www.apha.com/pac)

The Exhibitor Report Form must be signed by an official representative of the sponsoring cowboy mounted shooting club and then turned in with a shoot schedule/program within 30 days of the shoot.
